What began with a distressing video of an elderly woman allegedly caught shoplifting at Shoprite has sparked an outpouring of compassion, with Mandisi Tshingana now raising more than R40,000 to help her.

Tshingana initially raised R15,000 in just two hours after the incident attracted widespread attention on social media.
The video showed a security guard removing items from the woman’s clothing. Many viewers were moved by the groceries she reportedly had, including chicken pieces, beef stew, body lotion, green pepper and a small bag of rice.
The items prompted concern among social media users, with some questioning whether the woman was struggling to afford basic necessities. Her personal circumstances, however, have not been independently confirmed.
Touched by the public reaction, Tshingana rallied people to contribute towards helping the woman with groceries. The fundraising effort has since grown beyond R40,000, reflecting the generosity of people who want to offer her support.
But the initiative could go beyond putting food on her table.
In a social media post, Tshingana said the woman’s home had allegedly been broken into, with thieves reportedly taking her belongings, including the electricity box.
He appealed for people to consider setting a target for a Christmas food voucher and raising additional funds to assist with plumbing and electrical repairs.
The proposed assistance could help address some of the challenges the woman is reportedly facing, although further details about the planned support have not yet been provided.
The fundraising response has also shifted attention from the viral shoplifting video towards the importance of treating vulnerable people with dignity and considering the circumstances that may surround their struggles.
While the details of the woman’s situation remain limited, the growing contributions show how quickly people can come together when a call for help resonates with the public.
