Hundreds of Malawian Nationals Seek Refuge at Durban Hall Amid Fears of Anti-Illegal Immigration Crackdown

Approximately 500 Malawian nationals have reportedly fled their homes in the Clare Estate informal settlement and are seeking temporary shelter at Sherwood Hall.

The group is said to be seeking protection amid fears of violence, threats and growing hostility linked to the approaching 30 June 2026 deadline set by groups calling for action against undocumented foreign nationals in South Africa.

According to reports, many of those who arrived at the hall said they feared for their safety and chose to leave their homes before tensions could escalate.

The situation has prompted a significant security response, with members of the South African Police Service Public Order Policing Unit and eThekwini Metropolitan Police Service deployed to the area to maintain law and order.

Police and municipal authorities have established a presence around Sherwood Park and the hall precinct to prevent any potential unrest and ensure the safety of those seeking refuge.

The development comes amid heightened national debate around illegal immigration, border control and the presence of undocumented foreign nationals in South Africa.

Authorities have urged communities to remain calm and allow law enforcement agencies to address any concerns through lawful processes.
