EFF MP Naledi Chirwa Accuses Police of Intimidation During Roadblock

Naledi Chirwa has accused police officers of intimidation and abuse of power following an encounter at a roadblock.

According to Chirwa, police searched members of her team and allegedly threatened to arrest them after discovering that one of their drivers was not carrying a driver’s licence.

Chirwa argued that failing to have a driver’s licence in one’s possession is generally a traffic offence that attracts a fine rather than an arrest.

She claims that after they explained this to the officers, police allegedly insisted that they would proceed with an arrest and instructed them to prepare to go to the police station.

“We conceded and asked them to lead the way to the police station for our arrest,” Chirwa wrote on social media.

She further alleged that when it became clear that no money would be offered to the officers, the situation changed and the officers allegedly began insulting them before abandoning the threat of arrest.

Chirwa accused some police officers of treating roadblocks as opportunities to solicit money from motorists and called for such conduct to be exposed.

The allegations have sparked debate online, with some social media users supporting Chirwa’s claims while others have called for all sides of the incident to be heard.

Police have not yet publicly responded to the allegations.
