45kg Snake Recovering After Emergency Airlift to Johannesburg Wildlife Hospital

A snake named Desirée, weighing 45kg and measuring 4.3 metres long, is reportedly making a remarkable recovery after being rescued with serious injuries in the North West.

The large snake, believed to be more than 20 years old, was found injured on farmland in Zeerust on 19 May after allegedly suffering severe head injuries.

Due to the seriousness of her condition, Desirée was rushed to the airport and transported by aircraft to Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital for specialist treatment.

According to staff involved in her care, Desirée has shown encouraging signs of recovery.

In a moment that brought excitement to veterinary staff, the team said the snake recently attempted to bite them during treatment — something they viewed as a positive sign that she was regaining strength and returning to normal behaviour.

Veterinary teams continue to monitor her condition as she recovers from the injuries.

The rescue and treatment of Desirée has attracted attention from animal lovers, with many expressing relief that the giant snake survived and is showing signs of improvement.
