The number of charges against Tshwane Metro Police officer Peter “Gagash” Nonyane, his wife Charlotte Tibana and their co-accused has risen from 107 to 123 after more families came forward with complaints.
The latest charges were added on Friday at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo, where the accused are facing allegations involving the misappropriation of money from deceased estate accounts.
Tibana, an estate attorney, and Nonyane are among four accused facing charges of fraud, theft and money laundering. The other accused are Tibana’s sister, Rirhlweni Tibana, and Jabulani Maluleke.
The State alleges that about R11 million was taken from several deceased estate accounts.
The investigation has expanded as more families have approached authorities with complaints, resulting in the addition of 16 charges to the case.
Earlier proceedings revealed allegations concerning several estates administered by Tibana, with the State claiming that money intended for beneficiaries was unlawfully transferred and subsequently laundered.
The accused remain in custody as bail proceedings continue in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court.
All the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
