US President Donald Trump has promised to give every adult US citizen $5,000 if Republicans win control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump reiterated the promise on Saturday in a post on social media, saying the payments would be made if Republicans secure both chambers of Congress.
“If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 Midterm Elections, I’m going to give all adult citizens in the United States of America, $5,000!”
He added:
“Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to signing those checks!”
Trump previously referred to the proposed payment as a “Trump Dividend” when he introduced the idea at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas last month. He has suggested that strong economic performance and revenue generated through tariffs could help fund the payments.
However, details on how the proposed payments would be authorised and distributed have not been fully set out.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has previously said that congressional approval would be required for such a programme.
The promise is therefore conditional on the outcome of the November 2026 midterm elections and would require the necessary legal and legislative steps before payments could be made.
