Angelo Agrizzi ordered to pay state R1.66 billion linked to Bosasa corruption

The Pretoria High Court has ordered former Bosasa chief operating officer Angelo Agrizzi to pay the State R1 666 582 825.73, in a confiscation order linked to the company’s corrupt activities and the unlawful securing of government tenders.

The order was handed down on 29 October 2026 by Judge MJ Mosopa, following an application by the National Director of Public Prosecutions under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.

Agrizzi was convicted in November 2025 after pleading guilty to three counts of corruption and one count of money laundering arising from his role in Bosasa’s operations.

In his plea and sentence agreement, Agrizzi admitted that Bosasa operated a corruption network spanning more than two decades to secure and maintain government contracts. He acknowledged that approximately R75.7 million in bribes was paid between 2000 and 2016 to secure contracts valued at about R2.37 billion.

The State argued that Agrizzi had acted alongside other Bosasa executives in furtherance of a common purpose and benefited from the company’s unlawful activities.

Agrizzi disputed being held liable for the full value of the alleged unlawful proceeds, arguing that he was not the only person involved in the corruption network.

However, the court found that he had benefited from unlawful activities and that discrepancies in his financial disclosures supported the State’s application.

The court ordered him to pay the State R1 666 582 825.73, together with interest from the date of judgment until final payment.

He was also ordered to pay the costs of the proceedings, including the costs of two counsel on Scale C.

The confiscation order is separate from his criminal sentence and is intended to deprive him of financial benefits derived from unlawful activities.
