MAFIKENG – The home of an ActionSA councillor candidate has been torched in Rammotshere Moiloa Local Municipality in the North West.
According to a statement issued by the party, the incident occurred on Sunday. The circumstances surrounding the fire, including its possible cause, remain unknown.
ActionSA said the candidate had previously been subjected to intimidation during the election campaign, raising concerns that the incident could be politically motivated.
“We cannot dismiss the possibility that this incident may have been politically motivated. We sincerely hope this is an unfortunate coincidence and not an act intended to intimidate our candidate, disrupt her participation or undermine the democratic process ahead of the special voting period,” the party said.
The party added that no candidate should face threats to their safety or property because of their decision to contest an election.
“Political competition must never descend into intimidation, violence or the destruction of property,” it said.
ActionSA has called on the police to investigate the incident. No cause of the fire has been confirmed.
