A recording in which suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya allegedly threatens the father of the 16-year-old girl he is accused of sexually grooming was played in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
The recording formed part of the State’s case against Sibiya’s bail application, with prosecutors relying on it to raise concerns about possible interference with witnesses.
In the recording, Sibiya reminds the man, who was previously associated with him as a bodyguard, of financial support he allegedly provided, including money for groceries.
“You know how much I’ve supported you. I was giving R10 000. I was giving you money to buy groceries. I took you like my little brother but you talk bad things about me.”
Sibiya then appears to become more confrontational.
“The easiest person to deal with is you. I can deal with you quick and easy.”
He also tells the man that he had continued spending time with him despite knowing that he allegedly spoke negatively about him behind his back.
The State presented the recording while arguing that Sibiya’s release could create risks for witnesses in the case.
Sibiya is facing charges including rape, human trafficking, sexual grooming of a minor and a firearm-related charge. He denies the allegations.
The court also heard a separate recording involving an alleged attempt to influence a witness, with the State raising concerns about possible interference in the case.
Sibiya remains in custody as his bail proceedings continue.
