South African singer Tyla has secured her second Grammy Award after winning Best African Music Performance at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
The 24-year-old clinched the award for her hit song Push 2 Start, beating stiff competition from Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido and Ugandan star Eddy Kenzo.
This marks Tyla’s second consecutive win in the category, after taking home the same award in 2024 for her global breakout hit Water. Once again, she outperformed several of Africa’s biggest music stars, particularly from Nigeria.
Reacting to her win, an emotional Tyla said: “This is insane, this is so insane! I’m just so lucky to be here and I’m so proud to be African. I’m excited to see more of us over here.”
Social media erupted with praise following her victory, with “Congratulations Tyla” trending across South Africa and beyond. Many users celebrated her achievement, with one writing: “South Africa is proud of you! We are proud of you!” Another acknowledged the tough competition, saying: “I wished Ayra Starr had won, but Tyla really deserves it.”
The nominees in the Best African Music Performance category were:
Love – Burna Boy
With You – Davido ft Omah Lay
Hope & Love – Eddy Kenzo & Mehran Matin
Gimme Dat – Ayra Starr ft Wizkid
Push 2 Start – Tyla
Despite the global dominance of Afrobeats, the night ended in disappointment for Nigerian music fans, as none of the country’s artists walked away with the award.
