Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale has revealed that neither he nor fellow Deputy Minister Dr Shela Polly Boshielo has been assigned any official duties by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu since taking office.
Mathale made the disclosure while testifying before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, which is investigating allegations of political interference in the Ministry of Police, raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. He said both he and the other deputy have no defined roles or responsibilities and are not consulted for any decision-making in the ministry.
He added that although the ministry’s work is extensive and demanding, the minister has not delegated any duties to his deputies. As a result, they often wake up without knowing what tasks they are expected to perform, with no job descriptions or performance assessments in place.
Despite this, both deputies continue to draw full annual salaries of around R2.2 million, along with all associated benefits.
Mathale’s testimony underscores growing concerns about governance, accountability, and the use of public funds within the Ministry of Police.
The proceedings continue.
