Bellarmine Mugabe, the son of former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe, has been sentenced in a South African court following multiple offences, including pointing a firearm and being in the country illegally.

Mugabe was handed a 24-month sentence or a fine of R400,000 for pointing a firearm. In addition, he was given the option of paying R200,000 or serving 18 months in prison for being in South Africa unlawfully.

This brings the total to R600,000 in fines, which he is expected to pay before returning to Zimbabwe.

Co-accused receives direct prison sentence

His associate, Tobias Matonhodze, received a harsher sentence and was sentenced to three years in prison.

Authorities confirmed that once Matonhodze completes his sentence, he will be deported back to Zimbabwe.

Case highlights legal consequences for foreign nationals

The case underscores South Africa’s stance on illegal firearm-related offences and immigration violations, particularly involving foreign nationals.

Further details surrounding the incident leading to the charges have not been disclosed, but the sentencing marks the conclusion of the matter in court.
