Ramaphosa Says He Was Not Consulted on Disbandment of Political Killings Task Team

President Cyril Ramaphosa has revealed that he was only informed after the fact about the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), contradicting earlier claims by suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

Responding to questions in Parliament, Ramaphosa expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of consultation, stating that such a significant decision should not have been taken without his knowledge.

The President said he confronted Mchunu during a meeting on 13 February, where the minister confirmed that he had instructed National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola to disband the unit.

Ramaphosa emphasised that the authority to disband the task team lies with the National Commissioner, not the minister alone.

He further revealed that Masemola later assured him that the PKTT would not be disbanded and would continue its work.

The development highlights apparent tensions and miscommunication within the police leadership regarding the handling of the specialised unit tasked with investigating politically motivated killings.
