Police officer accused of raping Tanzanian detainee during toilet escort

The bail application of a 50-year-old police Warrant Officer, Bafana Joseph Ndala, is continuing as he faces allegations of raping a Tanzanian national who had been arrested for allegedly being in South Africa illegally.

According to reports, the alleged incident took place at Katlehong Police Station in Ekurhuleni on 25 September 2026.

The complainant reportedly told investigators that he had been arrested after police stopped him and he was unable to produce a passport. He was taken to the police station for processing and detention.

It is alleged that Ndala escorted the detainee to a toilet inside the station, where the alleged rape took place.

The complainant reportedly alleged that the officer first approached him while they were using the urinals before allegedly taking him into a toilet cubicle.

Ndala is facing a rape charge, and his bail application is currently before the court.

The allegations have raised concerns about the safety of people held in police custody. However, the case remains before the court, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
