South Africans have once again demonstrated the power of unity and social media after more than R50,000 was raised in less than 36 hours for a learner who was allegedly ridiculed by his teacher for not contributing money for a school Pie Day.
The fundraising effort was initiated by influencer Mandisi Tshingana, who shared the learner’s story with his more than 850,000 followers online.
Mandisi initially set out to raise just R1,000 to help the boy after learning that he could not afford the R50 required to participate in Pie Day at school. However, the response from South Africans quickly exceeded expectations.
Many supporters online expressed that if the learner could not afford R50, he deserved far more support. Donations rapidly poured in, pushing the total to over R50,000 within 36 hours.
Mandisi also revealed that a George-based brand has reached out and plans to send additional gifts to the learner.
The story has since sparked widespread praise for the generosity shown by ordinary South Africans, highlighting how social media can mobilise support quickly when communities come together for a shared cause.
For many, the fundraising effort has become a powerful example of how compassion and collective action can turn a painful moment into an opportunity for upliftment and hope.
