Malema Criticises Anti-Immigrant Protests, Says Foreign Nationals Not to Blame for Unemployment

EFF leader Julius Malema has weighed in on the ongoing protests against foreign nationals, criticising what he described as misplaced anger and internal divisions among South Africans.

Malema argued that some of the provinces currently leading anti-immigrant actions are the same regions that were historically marked by conflict among black South Africans during apartheid, suggesting that these tensions are now being redirected.

He further dismissed claims that foreign nationals are responsible for economic hardship, stating that Zimbabwean nationals have not taken land or jobs from South Africans.

According to Malema, the reality is that many of the jobs held by foreign nationals are roles that locals often reject, particularly due to perceptions around education and status.

Challenging the narrative

Malema’s comments directly challenge the growing narrative linking immigration to unemployment and land issues, which has been a central theme in recent protests.

His remarks are likely to spark further debate, as the country continues to grapple with rising tensions around immigration, economic inequality, and job scarcity.
