New details have emerged on how authorities identified the crocodile believed to be linked to the death of a businessman in the Komati River near Komatipoort.
Search teams reportedly noticed a crocodile behaving unusually — remaining out of the water for several days with a visibly swollen stomach. Experts indicate that crocodiles often stay out of water to aid digestion after feeding, which raised suspicion among investigators.
Discovery during examination
Police and search teams then acted on this observation and removed the crocodile for examination. Upon opening it, human tissue believed to belong to the missing 59-year-old businessman was discovered, which will be subjected to forensic testing to confirm identity.
Additional findings
During the examination, it is further reported that multiple items were found inside the crocodile’s stomach, including six pairs of Crocs shoes, adding a shocking dimension to the discovery.
Ongoing investigation
Authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the incident, while forensic processes are underway to formally confirm the identity of the remains.
The case has left the community shaken, highlighting the dangers associated with crocodile-infested rivers and bringing a tragic end to days of searching.
