Hantavirus Outbreak Reported on Cruise Ship, Three Dead

Health concerns are mounting after a reported outbreak of Hantavirus on a cruise vessel travelling from Saint Helena to Ascension Island.

According to reports, three people have died following the outbreak, while another passenger from the United Kingdom was airlifted to a hospital in South Africa for urgent medical treatment.

One of the affected reportedly died at the OR Tambo International Airport while catching a flight back to his home country.

Ship stranded offshore

The vessel is currently said to be near Cape Verde, where authorities have reportedly refused permission for passengers to disembark and access local healthcare services.

This has raised concerns about the safety and wellbeing of those still on board, as well as the potential spread of the virus.

What is hantavirus?

Hantavirus is a rare but serious viral infection, often linked to exposure to rodents or their droppings. It can cause severe respiratory illness and, in some cases, can be fatal if not treated promptly.

Ongoing concern

Authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely as:

  • More details emerge about the outbreak
  • The condition of passengers onboard becomes clearer
  • Efforts continue to secure medical assistance

The situation highlights the challenges of managing health emergencies at sea, especially when access to immediate care is limited.
