Geordin Hill-Lewis: “I Won’t Refuse If Asked to Act as President”

Geordin Hill-Lewis, leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Mayor of Cape Town, says he won’t refuse if called upon to act as President of South Africa should President Cyril Ramaphosa step down.

He made the comment amid growing questions about the DA’s future leadership and its national election ambitions.

As one of the DA’s most prominent young leaders, Hill-Lewis has been a key figure in Cape Town politics since becoming mayor in 2021.

While he didn’t say he’s planning to run for the presidency, he made it clear that if an interim role were required, he wouldn’t shy away from it. The statement highlights the DA’s push to show it has credible leaders ready to govern at a national level.

The DA is currently part of the Government of National Unity (GNU) with the ANC under Ramaphosa, but continues to position itself as a viable alternative for the country.
