Fannie Masemola to Appear in Court Over R360m Tender Case

South Africa’s National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, is set to appear in court in Pretoria following criminal charges linked to an irregular R360 million police health services tender.

Charges Linked to PFMA Violations

According to reports from March 2026, Masemola is facing charges related to alleged violations of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), particularly around procurement processes tied to the controversial tender awarded to businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

The case is considered significant, as it could become one of the first high-profile prosecutions of a top public official under PFMA provisions.

Summons Issued in March

Masemola was formally served with a court summons in March, compelling him to appear in court on 21 April 2026.

The charges stem from the awarding of a SAPS health services contract—linked to Matlala—which has been at the centre of a widening corruption investigation involving multiple police officials.

Part of a Wider Probe

The matter forms part of a broader probe into alleged irregularities within the South African Police Service (SAPS), where at least 12 officers were previously arrested in connection with the same tender.

While Masemola has not been directly accused of corruption in some reports, the focus of the charges is on accountability and compliance with financial management laws.

Masemola’s Response

Through police spokespersons, Masemola has indicated that he will cooperate fully with legal processes, maintaining that he welcomes any investigation aimed at addressing the allegations.
