Equality Court Rules Against Ngizwe Mchunu Over Remarks About LGBTQIA+ Community

The Equality Court has ruled against media personality Ngizwe Mchunu following proceedings linked to remarks he made about the LGBTQIA+ community.

According to the court order:

  • Mchunu has been directed not to make further remarks that discriminate against or promote hate against LGBTQIA+ people.
  • He has been instructed not to organise, promote or participate in protests or demonstrations that discriminate against LGBTQIA+ communities.
  • He must issue a public apology to the LGBTQIA+ community and publish it on his Facebook page, where it must remain visible for three months.
  • He has been ordered to pay R250,000 within 60 days.
  • The court directed that he complete 20 hours of human rights education and training.
  • He was also ordered to pay legal costs related to the matter.

The case follows complaints and legal action after statements made by Mchunu were alleged to amount to discrimination and hate speech under South Africa’s equality laws. The matter sparked national debate around freedom of expression, constitutional rights and protection from discrimination.
