Crime Intelligence Boss Says He Was Forced to Compile Report on Disbandment of Political Killings Task Team

Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo has told an Ad Hoc Committee in Cape Town that he was compelled to compile a report on the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), despite opposing the decision.

Khumalo testified that the instruction came from suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya, who allegedly directed him to draft the report and include feedback from key stakeholders on the disbandment.

He said the directive left him shocked, particularly because he had been against the dissolution of the task team.

“The most concerning aspects that I was expected to include in the report, according to the deputy national commissioner, was to include stakeholders’ feedback from organisations such as the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), in response to the announcement of the disbandment,” Khumalo said.

“In other words, I was supposed to ask them how do you feel? How did you take it? And then write back the report, which I found very shocking for me to do,” he added.

The committee is continuing its inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the disbandment of the PKTT and the decision-making processes within the South African Police Service.
