The ActionSA says it will open a criminal case against President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday, citing allegations linked to the renewed fallout over the Phala Phala scandal.
According to the party, the charges they intend to lay include fraud, making false statements, and alleged violations of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act. ActionSA claims the move follows new allegations regarding the amount of money stolen during the 2020 burglary at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm, arguing that the amount may have been higher than previously disclosed.
The development comes just a day after Ramaphosa addressed the nation following a landmark Constitutional Court ruling that revived the parliamentary impeachment process linked to the Phala Phala matter. During his national address, Ramaphosa said he would not resign, insisting that stepping down would undermine constitutional processes and his government’s anti-corruption agenda.
In his latest address to the nation, Ramaphosa defended his position, saying he intends to challenge aspects of the process while maintaining that he has done nothing wrong in relation to the Phala Phala incident. The Constitutional Court recently ruled that Parliament acted unlawfully in blocking an impeachment inquiry in 2022, effectively reopening scrutiny into the matter.
The political pressure on the President has intensified, with opposition parties calling for accountability, while the ANC and coalition partners continue to weigh their response.
