Delays Continue at Randfontein Community Health Centre Project After R200M Spent

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko recently visited the Randfontein Community Health Centre (CHC) in Mohlakeng to assess progress on the long-delayed construction project.

Project Stalled for Years

The facility, which forms part of a capital expenditure (CAPEX) project launched in 2018, has faced significant setbacks. The original contractor was terminated after experiencing financial management challenges, leaving the project incomplete.

For seven years, residents of Mohlakeng have been waiting for the completion of the much-needed health centre.

Millions Spent, Yet Incomplete

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has already spent over R200 million on the project. However, the building remains unfinished and not operational.

An additional R90 million is now required to complete the facility.

Pressure on Existing Clinics

Mohlakeng currently relies on two clinics, both of which are reportedly overburdened and struggling to meet the healthcare needs of the growing community.

Ya Rona Clinic closes at 4pm, which means community members who need access to healthcare in late hours, have to visit the already overburdened Mohlakeng Clinic.

The delay in completing the CHC has intensified pressure on these facilities, raising concerns about access to adequate healthcare services.

New Contractor Process Underway

Authorities have confirmed that processes are underway to appoint a new contractor so that construction can resume and the project can finally be completed.
