Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has sparked public debate after commenting on reports that 300 Ghanaian nationals had left South Africa to return to Ghana.
Speaking during a press Q&A session, Malema questioned claims that foreign nationals are taking employment opportunities away from South Africans.
“Ghanaians are gone. How many jobs have been created for South Africans out of 300?” Malema asked.
The EFF leader argued that the belief that foreign nationals are responsible for unemployment among South Africans is largely a myth.
Malema has consistently maintained that systemic economic issues, inequality and broader labour market challenges, rather than the presence of foreign nationals, are at the heart of South Africa’s unemployment crisis.
His latest comments have since triggered mixed reactions online, with some agreeing with his position while others continue to argue that undocumented migration impacts employment opportunities and access to services.
The remarks come amid ongoing national debates around immigration, unemployment and the role of foreign nationals in South Africa’s economy.
