Fresh controversy has emerged around the R2.2 million extortion case involving taxi boss and businessman Joe Sibanyoni and his co-accused, after unverified reports circulating online alleged that a prominent Member of Parliament (MP) may have attempted to influence the matter.
According to claims currently being shared on social media, a well-known MP allegedly contacted the complainant on Tuesday evening, reportedly attempting to persuade him to withdraw the case against Sibanyoni and his co-accused — Daniel Masilela, Philemon Msiza, and Oupa Sindane.
The allegations further claim that the MP allegedly promised the complainant a substantial reward in exchange for dropping the case.
The developments come as the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is reportedly preparing to reinstate the matter, after the case was recently struck off the roll due to a prosecutor being found in contempt of court for failing to appear.
However, the allegations regarding the MP have not been independently verified, and no official confirmation has been provided by law enforcement authorities or the NPA.
At this stage, the identity of the alleged MP remains unknown, and it is also unclear whether any formal complaint regarding the alleged phone call has been made to authorities.
Given the seriousness of the allegations, questions are likely to emerge over whether there was any attempt to interfere with an ongoing legal process, though no evidence has yet been publicly presented to substantiate the claims.
Kurrently has not independently verified the allegations and will continue to monitor developments.
