President Cyril Ramaphosa says he fully respects the Constitutional Court’s judgment in the EFF’s case challenging Parliament’s handling of Section 89 proceedings against him, and has reiterated that no one is above the law in South Africa.
The Presidency confirmed it has noted the court’s ruling, which dealt with the National Assembly’s decision not to initiate impeachment proceedings against the President under Section 89 of the Constitution.
In a statement, Ramaphosa reaffirmed his commitment to the Constitution, the independence of the Judiciary, and the rule of law. He added that he has consistently cooperated with all inquiries into the matter and believes any allegations must be tested through due process “without fear, favour or prejudice.”
“President Ramaphosa maintains that no person is above the law and that any allegations should be subjected to due process,” the Presidency said.
The President has also called on all South Africans to respect both the Constitutional Court’s judgment and the country’s judicial institutions.
The EFF had approached the court arguing that Parliament failed in its constitutional duty when it declined to hold the President accountable over the Phala Phala matter. The Constitutional Court has now delivered its judgment, though the Presidency has not indicated whether further steps will be taken in response.
