South African actors Melusi Mbele and Rosemary Zimu are set to return to screens in a gripping new drama, Strings Attached, premiering on Mzansi Magic.
The series centres on Lethabo, played by Zimu — a hardworking breadwinner who believes she has found her chance at love. Her world changes when she meets the enigmatic businessman Xolani, portrayed by Melusi Mbhele, who appears to offer her everything she desires. However, beneath the surface, his charm masks a darker reality as the relationship evolves into a complex web of manipulation and control.
A story rooted in real-life dynamics
According to Mzansi Magic’s Director of Local Entertainment Channels, Shirley Adonisi, the show aims to reflect real societal issues.
“This is a bold story that reflects the realities being navigated by many South Africans… It illustrates our commitment to telling stories that not only entertain but shine a light on the often-overlooked dynamics of psychological and emotional manipulation.”
The series is produced by Ray Content Hub and directed by Nthabi Tau, who said the concept was inspired by the blurred lines between love and control.
Balancing romance and psychological tension
Tau explained that the show deliberately avoids glamorising toxic relationships, instead drawing viewers into the emotional complexity of the characters.
“The goal was never to present toxicity as desirable, but to show how it can feel desirable in the moment… We wanted viewers to question their own reactions.”
She added that the chemistry between the cast was crucial in bringing authenticity and emotional depth to the story, allowing even subtle moments to carry weight.
Sparking important conversations
Strings Attached also aims to open conversations around emotional boundaries, self-worth, and the realities of modern relationships, particularly within the South African context.
Tau noted that many people inherit ideas about love from cultural and social influences, which can sometimes make it difficult to recognise unhealthy dynamics.
A psychological storytelling approach
What sets the series apart is its intimate and psychological storytelling style, where events are not always presented in a straightforward way, but rather through the emotional perspectives of the characters.
The production, according to Tau, became more than just a show — offering a deeper reflection on human behaviour and resilience.
Premiere details
Strings Attached premieres on Monday, 4 May at 20:00 on Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161).
