The South African Police Service in Mpumalanga has arrested 12 suspects during a targeted operation against illicit mining activities near Waterval Boven.
The suspects face a range of charges, including immigration violations, possession of suspected gold-bearing material, possession of mining equipment, and selling liquor without a licence.
Equipment seized
During the operation, police confiscated several items believed to be used in illegal mining, including generators, gas cylinders, pendukas, and other specialised tools.
Authorities say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining networks, which continue to pose risks to safety, the environment, and the economy.
Separate arrest in Graskop
In a separate but related enforcement action in Graskop, a 27-year-old undocumented foreign national was arrested and fined for a road traffic offence.
Police say operations targeting illegal activities in the province will continue as part of broader law enforcement initiatives.
