Security Guard Accused of Killing Colleague Hands Himself Over to Police

A man accused of killing his girlfriend, who was also his colleague, has reportedly handed himself over to police and is expected to appear in court on Thursday.

The victim has been identified as Sphumelele Nkomo, also known as Sphume, originally from Makhutha. She was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, Khulekani Mchunu, who is said to be from Lundi in Mandeni. Both were employed as security guards at R.K. Khan Hospital in Chatsworth.

According to eyewitness accounts, the couple allegedly argued while travelling in a staff vehicle. During the confrontation, the suspect is said to have taken the victim’s cellphone and smashed it on the ground.

It is further alleged that later that night, the victim was heard crying before running into nearby bushes, reportedly attempting to escape from the suspect. She was later reported missing.

The woman’s body was eventually discovered buried in the yard of the suspect’s home, confirming fears of foul play.

Following the incident, the suspect allegedly fled to his home area. He later handed himself over to police in his hometown on Wednesday.

Community members and those close to the victim have expressed outrage over the killing and are expected to attend the court appearance, calling for the suspect to be denied bail.

Police investigations are ongoing.
