CottonFest, the youth-driven music and culture festival founded by the late musician Riky Rick, will officially come to an end. The organisers made the announcement on Tuesday, 9 December, confirming that the festival will not proceed as planned.
In a press statement, organisers explained that although the 2026 edition had been announced earlier this year, internal disputes among shareholders have made it impossible to continue.
│ “After a careful internal review and consideration, it became clear that the shareholders no longer share the same long-term vision,” the statement read.
They added that this divergence has strained operations and made it increasingly difficult to uphold the standards and creative vision originally set out by Riky Rick.
Riky Rick’s wife, Bianca Naidoo, who has been leading the festival alongside the team, said the event has always been grounded in creativity, community and cultural celebration, with a mission to elevate young talent.
│ “While we remain extremely proud of what the festival has achieved and are deeply grateful for the support it has received from our fans, partners and the artists over the years, the differences in the festival’s vision and purpose among the two parties has made it clear to our family and the team that concluding this chapter is the most realistic path forward,” she said.
The organisers noted that the decision was made after thoughtful consideration and in the best interest of all stakeholders, including staff, collaborators and the broader community that has supported the festival for more than seven years.
│ “Bianca, together with the Makhado family, have expressed appreciation for everyone who has contributed to CottonFest’s growth and its impact on the arts and entertainment landscape, and the drive to keep Riky’s legacy alive,” the statement continued.
While the festival itself will cease under its current structure, the CottonFest Creative Programme, launched in 2025, will continue its work by creating opportunities for young creatives throughout the year.
