Shock and sadness have gripped KwaZulu-Natal following the tragic death of Dr Godo Olulala Amankankane Mthembu, a respected traditional healer who was shot and killed at his home in KwaMhlabuyalingana on Friday night.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that detectives in Manguzi are investigating a case of murder after the 61-year-old was attacked by unknown gunmen while relaxing with friends.
“Reports indicate that the victim and others were seated under a tree having a braai when an unknown man approached and opened fire at close range. Another gunman also fired shots. The victim was declared dead at the scene,” said Netshiunda.
The motive behind the killing remains unknown, and police are searching for the suspects.
Dr Mthembu was highly regarded for his dedication to helping people, often treating patients free of charge. He made headlines several years ago when he alerted police after a man tried to sell him a person with albinism, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
The case has once again highlighted the dangers faced by people with albinism in parts of South Africa, where false beliefs about their body parts being used for muthi have led to horrific crimes.
Dr Mthembu is survived by 10 wives and more than 60 children. Police have urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
