Shadrack Sibiya to spend another weekend in prison as court postpones bail decision

Suspended deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya will spend another weekend behind bars at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre as the court is expected to deliver its decision on his bail application on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.

Sibiya, who has been in custody since his arrest in September, will have to wait several more days to find out whether he will be released on bail or remain behind bars while his criminal case proceeds.

His bail application is being heard at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court, where the state is opposing his release.

Serious charges against Sibiya

Sibiya faces five charges, including rape, human trafficking and offences relating to the alleged sexual grooming of a minor. The allegations involve a 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman.

The state has opposed bail, raising concerns that include the possibility of witness interference. Sibiya has denied the allegations against him.

His detention at Kgosi Mampuru has also attracted attention during the bail proceedings, with his legal team previously raising concerns about his conditions of confinement and difficulties consulting with him.

The court’s decision on Tuesday will determine whether Sibiya can await further proceedings outside prison or must remain in custody.

The anticipated ruling comes almost a month after his arrest on 21 September 2026.
