268 inmates prepare to write matric exams as numbers rise from 171 in 2025

A total of 268 inmates are preparing to write their matric examinations this year, marking an increase from the 171 inmates who sat for the examinations in 2025.

The Department of Correctional Services confirmed that the candidates are enrolled at 18 correctional schools across the country, where they have been given an opportunity to continue their education while serving their sentences or awaiting the conclusion of their cases.

The increase means 97 more inmates are preparing to write matric this year compared with last year, representing a rise of approximately 57%.

Education behind bars

Education programmes in correctional facilities provide inmates with opportunities to gain recognised qualifications that may support their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

Completing matric can improve access to further education, skills development and employment opportunities after release.

The 268 candidates will now have an opportunity to demonstrate their readiness as they prepare for this year’s examinations.

The Department of Correctional Services has not provided further details about the individual candidates or their distribution across the 18 correctional schools.
