Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana defender Khuliso Mudau is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a ruptured Achilles during Sundowns’ Betway Premiership encounter against Marumo Gallants on Wednesday night.
Mudau went down during the first half at Loftus Versfeld and was unable to continue. He was eventually taken off on a stretcher and replaced by Zuko Mdunyelwa in the 38th minute as Sundowns went on to secure a 2-0 victory.
Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso confirmed after the match that the initial diagnosis was an Achilles rupture and said the Bafana Bafana right-back would undergo further specialist assessment before beginning his recovery.
Reports indicate that the injury could keep Mudau out for an extended period, with estimates of six to 12 months being circulated. However, the exact recovery timeline will depend on the outcome of his specialist examinations and rehabilitation.
The injury represents a significant blow for both Sundowns and Bafana Bafana.
Mudau has established himself as one of South Africa’s leading right-backs and was part of the Bafana team that competed at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, playing throughout South Africa’s historic campaign.
