Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly reached an agreement with Danish giants FC Copenhagen for the transfer of Bafana Bafana winger Thapelo Maseko, with the fee understood to be around €1.5 million (approximately R28 million).
The reported agreement comes after weeks of uncertainty surrounding Maseko’s future at Sundowns. Recent reports had indicated that the 22-year-old was unhappy with his situation at the club and was keen on securing a move abroad.
From SuperSport to Sundowns
Maseko, who was born in Sebokeng, Gauteng, developed through the SuperSport United academy before breaking into the senior team. He subsequently joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2023.
His opportunities at Sundowns were affected by a series of injuries and limited game time. The club eventually sent him on loan to AEL Limassol in Cyprus, a move that helped revive his form and playing time.
His performances in Cyprus helped earn him a place in South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, where he made an impact on the biggest stage.
World Cup breakthrough
Maseko’s World Cup campaign proved particularly significant. His performances contributed to Bafana Bafana’s historic run, including their progression to the knockout phase of the tournament for the first time.
The tournament further raised his profile and intensified interest in his future, with European clubs reportedly monitoring his situation.
FC Copenhagen now appears to have won the race for his signature, with the reported €1.5 million deal potentially giving Maseko another opportunity to establish himself in European football.
A new chapter in Europe
For Maseko, the proposed move represents an important opportunity to build on the momentum generated by his World Cup performances.
At just 22, the Bafana international still has considerable room for development, and a move to Denmark could provide him with a new environment in which to establish himself and compete at a higher level.
However, while reports indicate that Sundowns and Copenhagen have reached a club-to-club agreement, the transfer still needs to be formally completed before Maseko can officially become a Copenhagen player.
If the deal is finalised, Maseko will leave Sundowns after three years at the club and begin what could be the next major chapter of his career in European football.
