Argentina Produce Stunning Comeback to Eliminate Egypt and Keep World Cup Dream Alive

Defending world champions Argentina national football team produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, overturning a two-goal deficit to beat Egypt national football team 3-2 and book their place in the quarter-finals.  

Egypt looked set for a famous victory after opening a 2-0 lead, leaving the reigning champions on the brink of elimination with just over 10 minutes remaining. However, Argentina mounted a remarkable fightback, with Cristian Romero pulling one back in the 79th minute before Lionel Messi levelled the score four minutes later. Enzo Fernández then completed the comeback with a stoppage-time winner to send Argentina through.  

The victory means Argentina’s defence of their World Cup title remains alive, while Egypt bow out after a courageous performance that won praise from football fans around the world.
