Bongokuhle Hlongwane Emerges as Highest-Paid South African in MLS

Following the release of player salaries by Major League Soccer, South African football star Bongokuhle Hlongwane has emerged as the highest-paid South African currently playing in the MLS.

The Minnesota United FC forward reportedly earns a staggering $1,142,500 per year, which translates to approximately R18.8 million annually or around R1.56 million per month.

Hlongwane, who joined Minnesota United from Maritzburg United in 2022, has grown into one of the club’s key attacking players in the United States. The 25-year-old has impressed with his pace, versatility and goalscoring ability, establishing himself as one of South Africa’s most successful football exports abroad.

The MLS salary release also revealed the earnings of other South Africans in the league, including Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who reportedly earns around R10.8 million a year, while Olwethu Makhanya and Puso Dithejane are also earning millions playing in the US.

Hlongwane’s salary highlights the growing financial rewards available to South African players who secure moves to overseas leagues.
