A woman believed to be in her 30s has died following a devastating multi-vehicle crash on the N3 between Mariannhill Toll Plaza and Shongweni.
According to preliminary reports, a truck overturned and rolled across the roadway before colliding with several vehicles.
The woman sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
Three other motorists suffered serious injuries and were transported to various hospitals in the eThekwini area for urgent medical treatment.
Authorities have confirmed that the Pietermaritzburg-bound carriageway remains closed as emergency teams continue clearing the scene.
The truck was reportedly transporting maize, much of which was scattered across the highway when the vehicle overturned, contributing to the road closure.
Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and make use of alternative routes while recovery and clean-up operations continue.
