A witness identified as Witness K, a JMPD officer and former girlfriend of Julius Mkhwanazi, has told the Madlanga Commission that Mkhwanazi allegedly played a central role in planning the seizure and sale of gemstones reportedly worth R14.9 million.
Giving evidence before the Commission, Witness K claimed she assisted by gathering information through an informer, who allegedly identified an apartment in Killarney where the gemstones were being kept.
According to her testimony, she passed this information to Julius Mkhwanazi, who then allegedly arranged for officers linked to Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department to go to the apartment and seize the stones.
Witness K alleged that when officers arrived, the owner reportedly admitted that they did not have the necessary permit for the gemstones, after which the stones were taken.
She further testified that the gemstones, allegedly worth R14.9 million, were later sold for R110,000.
According to Witness K, the money was then allegedly shared among those involved and she claimed she personally received R22,000.
These allegations emerged during testimony before the Commission and have not been tested in court. No findings of wrongdoing have been made.
