The State has made startling allegations against self-proclaimed political fixer Brown Mogotsi, claiming he planned to escape from the holding cells at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court during a previous court appearance.
The allegations emerged as prosecutors opposed Mogotsi’s fourth bail application, arguing that he poses a flight risk and should remain behind bars.
According to the State, the alleged escape was planned for 20 August 2026, when Mogotsi was due to appear in court.
Prosecutors are expected to rely on the alleged escape plan as part of their argument against his release, particularly when addressing whether Mogotsi can be trusted to attend future court proceedings if granted bail.
The claim is particularly significant because this is Mogotsi’s fourth attempt to secure bail, with the court once again required to weigh his personal circumstances against the State’s reasons for keeping him in custody.
At this stage, the allegation that Mogotsi planned to escape remains the State’s version before the court and has not been established as fact.
Mogotsi, who has previously described himself as a political fixer, has become a prominent figure in several controversies involving senior political and law-enforcement figures, with his name also featuring extensively in proceedings before the Madlanga Commission.
The court will ultimately have to determine what weight should be attached to the State’s latest allegations when deciding whether Mogotsi should be released on bail.
