South African poet, author and media personality Ntsiki Mazwai has officially entered politics after being unveiled as the Land Party’s mayoral candidate for Johannesburg ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
Mazwai’s announcement marks her first bid for public office and adds another high-profile name to the increasingly competitive race for the City of Johannesburg’s top job. She joins a growing list of mayoral candidates as political parties prepare for the municipal elections later this year.
Speaking after accepting the nomination, Mazwai said she was entering the race to serve the people of Johannesburg and offer a different vision for the city.
“I raise my hand, not only to be counted, but to offer my hand to every resident who loves Johannesburg.”
The Land Party said Mazwai’s candidacy represents an alternative to traditional politics, with a focus on land reform, service delivery and grassroots community development.
Her entry into politics has sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some welcomed her decision to step into public office, others questioned her lack of political experience and whether she is ready to lead South Africa’s economic hub.
