The Eastern Cape Department of Transport says police have launched an investigation into a tragic crash that claimed seven lives in Kariega.
At least 18 other people were injured in the collision, which involved a bus and a minibus taxi on Monday morning.
According to initial reports, the minibus taxi — transporting workers from KwaNobuhle to Kariega — allegedly made a U-turn in front of an oncoming bus, which had only the driver on board. The sudden manoeuvre is believed to have led to the devastating crash.
Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose described the incident as devastating and confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause.
The MEC for Transport, Xolile Nqatha, has extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, warning against dangerous manoeuvres on the road.
