Suspended police sergeant Fannie Nkosi remains behind bars following his first appearance at the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on 7 April 2026.
Nkosi, a member of the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, faces multiple charges including defeating the ends of justice, theft, possession of unlicensed ammunition, and possession of an explosive device.
Arrest and Court Proceedings
He was arrested on 2 April 2026 after police carried out a search-and-seizure operation at his home.
During court proceedings, Nkosi’s legal representative, Advocate Sizo Dlali, argued that his client is being targeted, describing the charges against him as “flimsy.”
Dlali also told the court that Nkosi has not eaten since his arrest, claiming he does not trust the source of the food provided.
The defence further argued that Nkosi is at a disadvantage, as his arrest was widely publicised, potentially influencing public perception before his day in court.
Bail Hearing and Detention
The matter has been postponed to 13 April 2026 for a formal bail application.
Arguments were also heard regarding his detention. The State maintained that Nkosi should remain in prison due to alleged threats to his life, while his legal team argued that he would be safer in police custody rather than in a correctional facility.
Magistrate Rene Venter ruled that Nkosi will remain at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre, specifically in the hospital wing. No further details were provided regarding his placement in that section.
Linked to Madlanga Commission
Nkosi recently testified before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where he made allegations implicating senior police officials in organised crime.
The case is expected to draw continued public attention as legal proceedings unfold.
