The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has decided not to prosecute — at this stage — a 58-year-old man arrested in connection with a fatal road rage shooting in Emmarentia, Johannesburg.
Decision Pending Further Investigation
The suspect had been expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court following his arrest for the murder of Faisal ul Rehman (48) and the attempted murder of his wife, Tehseen.
However, NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole confirmed that the matter will not proceed for now.
“After careful consideration of the evidence… the NPA has decided not to prosecute the matter pending further investigation,” she said.
Self-Defence Claim
The suspect’s legal team submitted representations arguing that he acted in self-defence.
In his statement, the man alleged that:
- He was verbally and physically confronted after a minor collision
- The situation escalated when a firearm was produced and discharged
- He responded by firing in what he described as private defence
Police Version of Events
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the incident began as a minor accident on Barry Hertzog Avenue before escalating into a shooting.
Police have opened cases of murder and attempted murder, with investigations ongoing.
Family Seeks Justice
The decision has come as a blow to the Rehman family, who have indicated they intend to pursue justice through all available legal avenues.
The case has drawn widespread attention, with calls for accountability as authorities continue their investigation.
