Mazwi Kubheka was kidnapped and later dumped in a veld in Ekurhuleni, before managing to walk to safety — this according to both his family and authorities.
Kubheka, who had been missing for weeks, was allegedly released by his captors on 2 May 2026. He then walked until he reached a main road, where a taxi driver assisted him and transported him towards Vosloorus.
He was later dropped near a roadblock, where police officers intervened and directed him to proceed to the Vosloorus Police Station. It was there that authorities contacted his family, confirming he had been found.
Kidnapping confirmed
At a media briefing, Panyaza Lesufi and police confirmed that Kubheka had indeed been kidnapped.
Authorities further revealed that South African, Ethiopian and Malawian nationals are believed to be behind the crime, as investigations continue.
Condition raises concern
Despite his safe return, Kubheka’s family says he is not in a stable condition and is currently receiving medical care. He is believed to be physically and emotionally traumatised following the ordeal.
Investigation intensifies
Police are continuing investigations to determine:
- The full circumstances of the kidnapping
- Who was involved
- Whether arrests will follow
The case has drawn widespread attention, particularly amid earlier concerns around spaza shop-related tensions in the area.
