Makashule Gana has been elected as the chairperson of Parliament’s impeachment committee tasked with handling proceedings relating to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Gana’s nomination was put forward by the African National Congress and received the backing of a majority of committee members.
During the voting process, Wonderboy Mahlatsi was nominated by a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters as an alternative candidate for the position.
Gana secured 19 votes, while Mahlatsi received 12 votes, resulting in the Rise Mzansi leader being elected chairperson of the committee.
The impeachment committee is expected to play a significant role in overseeing parliamentary processes related to the Section 89 impeachment proceedings.
