The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has warned that it does not have sufficient funds to cover a proposed six-month extension of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into police corruption.
Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi confirmed during a parliamentary briefing that the department has already spent R123 million of its allocated R147 million budget, leaving limited room to continue funding the inquiry without additional resources.
Kubayi said the department has formally approached Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to request additional funding to sustain the commission’s work.
The funding shortfall has raised concerns about whether the inquiry can continue without diverting resources from other critical areas within the justice system.
The minister also flagged rising costs linked to other inquiries, including the Nkabinde Enquiry, placing further strain on the department’s budget.
Despite the financial pressure, officials indicated that both the Madlanga Commission and the Khampepe Commission are currently operating within their allocated budgets. However, the situation may become unsustainable if the extension proceeds without additional funding.
The Madlanga Commission is tasked with probing allegations of corruption and misconduct within the police, making its continuation critical to broader accountability efforts within law enforcement.
