A male e-hailing passenger lost his life in a tragic crash on the N12 East, shortly after the N12/R24 split, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services, the fatal accident occurred at approximately 02:50 when a sedan transporting an Uber driver and passenger crashed into the rear of an eight-ton truck travelling in the same direction.
Emergency crews from the Bedfordview Fire Station were dispatched to the scene after reports of a serious motor vehicle collision.
Upon arrival, responders found the sedan extensively damaged following the rear-end crash.
The male passenger suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene by Gauteng Ambulance Service paramedics.
The Uber driver survived the collision but sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment.
The circumstances leading to the crash remain unclear and are currently under investigation by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD).
Authorities have urged motorists to remain vigilant on the roads, especially during late-night and early-morning hours when fatigue and poor visibility can contribute to devastating accidents.
