TikTok entertainer Olwethu Ncapayi has taken social media by storm after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and media studies from Rhodes University.
The 23-year-old, based in Makhanda, officially graduated on March 25, majoring in journalism and media studies (TV) and African languages (isiXhosa).
Balancing Books and Content Creation
Known for his humorous skits that mimic African parents, Ncapayi revealed that his academic journey and content creation have always gone hand in hand.
By day, he focused on lectures, assignments, and his role as a tutor for first-year journalism students. By night, he dedicated his time to creating content.
“At night, when everyone else was asleep, I would begin creating content, shooting and preparing the videos I upload on my social platforms. Over time, this became my version of a social life,” he said.
Inspired by Everyday Xhosa Life
Ncapayi began creating content in 2023, driven by a passion for storytelling and a desire to authentically represent everyday Xhosa experiences.
“A major source of inspiration comes from my lived experience of growing up in an ordinary Xhosa household,” he said.
“I noticed that everyday dynamics were rarely represented in mainstream media in a consistent or relatable way.”
Through recurring characters such as the mother, father and son, his skits capture humour, language and the unspoken social rules that define many households.
“My storytelling is not only driven by creativity but also by a desire to preserve and normalise cultural experiences that are often overlooked,” he added.
Building a Future in Media
Currently pursuing his honours degree at Rhodes University, Ncapayi believes his academic background has played a crucial role in shaping his creative voice and approach to digital storytelling.
“I do not create content purely for entertainment, I prioritise representation and aim to produce content that educates and informs,” he said.
His studies in African languages have further strengthened his mission to use digital platforms to preserve culture, language and identity.
Ncapayi’s journey has been widely praised online, with many celebrating his ability to balance education and creativity while building a meaningful presence in the digital space.
